The advent of the internet and smartphones have made grocery shopping easier than ever. You can simply go on the web via your phone, browse through the products each shops sells, purchase the products and have them delivered directly to your home. Internet shopping has made it easier to buy Asian products as well, which was very difficult to do and unthinkable nearly 10 years ago.

However, there may be times that you want to go to the shop to buy the things you need. You may want to check the products out properly prior to buying them or you may perhaps find something that intrigues you. In any case, New York has a couple of authentic Japanese grocery stores if you feel like going for a walk and checking some of them out.

Katagiri

Location: 224 E 59th Street

Apparently the oldest Japanese grocery in the United States, the things they sell in their stores are very legit. The price of their products are not bad at all considering how its in the middle of Manhattan. Not only are their selections of products very wide, they have a corner where you can have someone cook you a ready cooked meal in a couple of minutes where you can get good Japanese food for relatively reasonable price. Furthermore, they have a wide range of raw fish selection and if you look at the quality of their fish, you will notice that the quality is much better than the fish you get at your local supermarket. We would advise that you ask the shopkeepers if they can be eaten raw just in case.

Dainobu

Location: 36 W 56th Street

Located right by the Grand Central Station, Dainobu is another famous Japanese Grocery Shops. Their products are obviously very authentic and since there are a lot of Japanese companies on Park Avenue, a lot of Japanese people head to this store to get some Japanese food for lunch or dinner. They have a wide range of ready prepped food which only needs to be microwaved so even though there is no space to eat inside the shop, you can borrow the microwave in the shop for a quick eat. Again, considering the how its in the middle of Manhattan, the price is very reasonable so if you are in the vicinity, consider checking it out.

Sakura-Ya

Location: 73-05 Austin Street, Queens

If you are living close to Queens, Sakura-Ya would be the perfect place for you to get your Japanese groceries. Everything product sold there are very authentic and the price is a little bit better than the Japanese grocery shops in Manhattan. They also have a very wide range of products from ready to eat bento boxes to Japanese sweets so definitely check it out and try out some Japanese products.
